Why Aegis?

As with so much of Greek (and later, Roman) mythology, the origin, description and ownership of the ‘Aegis” is shrouded in mystery. The word comes from the Greek word meaning goatskin, and indeed was a goatskin Athene (or Athena) wore around her shoulders as armor. However, in the Aeneid, the aegis was described by Virgil as a snakeskin which “Athene wears in her angry moods—a fearsome thing with a surface of gold like scaly snake-skin.”

While often associated with Athena it was also often portrayed as the shield of Zeus. It’s believed the transition into shield came through folk-etymology, from people familiar with draping an animal skin over the left arm as a shield.

Whatever the origins, in modern terminology the word aegis has become synonymous with “protection”. According to Wikipedia, “The modern concept of doing something “under someone’s aegis” means doing something under the protection of a powerful, knowledgeable, or benevolent source.”

The United States Navy has adopted the name for its super-sophisticated fleet defense system. Aegis class Cruisers and Destroyers are equipped with the latest Radar and Sonar systems to detect threats in the air, on the surface of the ocean, and under the ocean. In addition, their weapons systems are deadly to threats or attacks from any source.

And so, it seemed fitting that we adopt the name to describe our company and the services we provide.
